The Healing Ministry of Jesus

Lesson 4

For much of Jesus ministry he dealt with the spirit behind the sickness

Mat 9:35  Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.
Mat 9:36  When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

We’re not speaking about demon possessing, but how Jesus healed all who were being harassed by the devil. When talked about the demons we have to understand that just as God has his angels on assignment the enemy has his angels on assignments, there are spirits of infirmity that have been assigned to harass people. Mat 8:16, Luke 13:11, 1 John 3:8

  • We understand that in Genesis that when sin came into the world so did sickness, so did decay

1 John 5:19 we know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
KJV the whole world lieth in wickedness. The whole world is influenced, effected, diseased, degenerating from it’s original plan because of the evil one

The biblical definition of a Christian is someone that is no longer following the ways of the world; we have turned from sin and turned to God. That is the goal of the Christian life

  • We have the choice of whether we live under the influence of the enemy or the power of God
  • The way we allow the influence of the enemy is when we listen to the lies of the enemy instead of walking in the truth of God’s word
  • The enemy can influence us through lies, deception, ignorance and unbelief
  • Adam and Eve missed out on the blessings of God because they fell for the lie of the enemy. 1 Pet 5:8
  • For us to walk in the truth we have to walk in the light of God’s word. 1Jn 1:5-7
  • The bible makes it very clear that the enemy is out to influence our lives, render us ineffective in the kingdom, what a better way to do that, than through sickness

If we are going to stand in faith, we have to have a clear understanding that the root cause of sickness is a result of the fall and the result of Adams rebellion caused by the devil’s deception.

  • In Ex 15:26 God gives a revelation to the Children of Israel of himself as the God who heal,
  • Here God is speaking in the permissive tense, God does not bring the sickness upon us but when we break God’s laws, he has to stand back. Exo 23:25

God revealed Himself in the Old Testament as our healer, even under the old covenant healing was appropriated by faith in God and His word

Prov 4:20-22  My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.
Psa 103:2  Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits
Psa 103:3  who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
Psa 105:37  He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.
Psa 107:19-20  Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.

Is Healing for all?

Mat 4:23  Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.
Mat 8:16  When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.
Mat 12:15  Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick,
Mat 14:36  and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.

Jesus never went around telling some that they could be healed, and others that they couldn’t be healed, Jesus came to do the will of His father and went around healing everyone and everybody: Heb 13:8

  • If it was His will to heal everyone back then, it must be his will to heal everyone today.

Mat 10:1  He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
James 5:14  Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
James 5:15  And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

Faith begins where the will of God is know

1 John 5:14-15  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us–whatever we ask–we know that we have what we asked of him.

  • Whether God chooses to heal you through standing on His Word in Faith or to heal you instantaneously by a miracle, we have to know that it is His will is for you to be healed
  • Without faith it’s impossible to please God
  • Faith is the ability to believe God even when we don’t see it happening instantaneously or miraculously, that it is God’s will to heal us and that he is able to do what he has promised. Mat 16:1-10
  • In other words, Jesus said how many miracles do you need to see before you are going to believe that I can supply your needs
  • How many people do I need to heal before you will believe that I can heal?

There are three laws that can be broken

  • There are natural laws that can be broken
  • There are emotional laws that can be broken
  • There are spiritual laws that can be broken

1.    The Natural Laws

We can allow sickness into our lives by simply neglecting the way we eat, or through unhealthy lifestyles

  • We also live in a day and age where even a lot of the so called “Healthy food” is depleted of vitamins and minerals, nutrients, the essentials we need for good health
  • We live in a day and age where people are malnutrition because of low self image, they starve themselves trying to keep up appearance, and their health is effected by under eating
  • Some because of people overeat, because of bad eating habits, because of stress, because of hurts,
  • We can allow sickness through exhaustion, fatigue, or lack of sleep

2.    The Emotional Laws

Soul sickness,

  • With all the modern technology doctors can diagnose a broken bone, a swollen gland, a cancerous tissue, but it is very difficult to determine soul sickness
  • Our bodies can release up to 1000 toxins into the body because anger, bitterness, stress, resentment, unforgiveness and depression
  • John said to his friend Gaius, that his prayer was that he would enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.
  • John recognised the balance between a healthy soul and a healthy body
  • It’s not so much what we eat that causes soul sickness but what is eating us
  • If we allow bitterness, strife, resentment, and unforgiveness to remain unchecked to dwell in our lives it will not only affect our health but it causes us to violate God’s laws

Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

  • The good news is that Jesus not only came to heal the sick but he came to heal the broken hearted

3.    The Spiritual Laws

Deu 28:1 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God:
Deu 28:15 However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

We looked earlier how we can open ourselves up to the influence of effects of the evil one when we disobey God’s Word, when we fail to walk in the truth of God’s word

Gal 5:21 speaks of the lust of the flesh and Paul says “ warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Gal 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

When we violate God’s laws, we can open ourselves up to influence of the enemy

  • The good news is that:
  • If we have violated natural laws, we can change our lifestyle
  • If we have violated emotional laws, we know that God has come to heal the broken hearted
  • If we have violated spiritual laws, we can repent because he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness

We can also receiving healing by the anointing

The anointing can be imparted whether through the laying on of hands, thorough objects such as hankies and aprons

Acts 19:12  so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.

  • The bible says that people touched the hem of His garment and virtue flowed from Jesus into the person
  • The people where in a position and place of expectancy,
  • The bible says that even in the ministry of Jesus he could not minister because of their unbelief. Mat 13:58
  • When they brought the sick to Jesus not all them came in faith but they all came with an expectancy

When need to receive the Word of God,

  • It doesn’t matter who is the vessel is it is God does the healing, when we come for prayer we not coming because someone said to come, we need to come because faith has risen in your heart because of the word of God 1 Th 2:13

Act upon the anointing

There is nowhere in the bible that Jesus or the disciples actually prayed for the sick, they actually commanded healing, they spoke healing, and people acted upon the anointing

Mark 2:11  “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
Mark 2:12  He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
Luke 17:14  When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.
John 9:11  He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”
Acts 3:6  Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
Acts 3:7  Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.

The good news is

Whether someone is healed by the anointing or by personal faith in the Word we can be confident that it is God’s will for us to be healed

Luke 4:18  “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,  to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Please complete and submit  this SOAP part of this devotional each week, we are looking forward to what God has revealed to you in His Word and through this Study.

As disciples we don't always need more information but we need new revelation from God. Is there a certain part of the teaching that you loved, that stood out for you or you felt God was giving you insight into it?
Discipleship is all about learning God says. What was something new that you learnt in this lesson?
Putting God's word into practice is the greatest thing we can do. Was there a lesson, a principle or a promise that you can put into practice in your life?
The greatest part of discipleship is taking what you have learnt and sharing it with someone else. What part of this lesson could you pass on to others?
If there are any questions or queries about this lesson or regarding the school of ministry please feel free to ask.
