The Character of God

Lesson 3

Wholeness and healing in the Character of God

  • The Collins dictionary says that character is a combination of traits and qualities that distinguishes a person, that describes a person and it reveals a person.
  • The character of God not only reveals what he is like but what he can do
  • Understanding a person’s character is a little like doing a jigsaw and the more piece of

The bible gives us a progressive revelation of the character and nature of God

  • Elohim: The awesome creative God. Gen 1:1
  • Jehovah: The self-existent one. Gen 2:4
  • Adonia: Lord and master. Gen 15:1-2
  • Elshaddai: The all sufficient one, the God of abundance. Gen 17:1
  • Jehovah Raah: the lord my Shepherd. Psa 23:1
  • Jehovah Jireh: the lord my Provider. Gen 22:14
  • Jehovah shalom: the lord my Peace. Judges 6:24
  • Jehovah Ropheca: the lord my Healer. Ex 15:26
  • Jehovah Tsidkenu: the lord my Righteousness. Jer 23: 6
  • Jehovah Shammah: the lord is Present. Ez 48:35
  • Jehovah Nissi: the lord my banner. Ex 17:15
  • Specifically I want to focus on God’s redemptive name: Jehovah Ropheca: the lord my Healer
  • Healing is not just a little trick God can do; God’s is a healing God, healing is a characteristic of God, it’s in his nature to Heal and it is His will to heal. Mar 1:40-41, Exo 15:26

The two ways that God chooses to deal with his people

  1. Through personal faith in Him and His Word
  2. Through the anointing

There are three different views concerning healing

1.    That God stopped healing after the time of the apostles

  • This view is really based on ignorance not only to the Word of God but to what God is doing around the world
  • If you look around the world today, God is still moving in power, He is doing he is raising up a Pentecostal, spirit filled, signs and wonders church. Heb 13:8
  • If you did a simply study or reading of the revivals in the world, whenever God moves in revival there is always an associated demonstration of the power gifts especially in salvations, miracles and healing

2.    That God chooses who he heals

  • This view is really based on experience on why some people get healed and other don’t. Acts 10:34
  • Scenario: If it is God’s will for some to be healed and others not to be.
  • Let’s assume, if it was not God’s will for me personal to be healed and I begin to pursue healing then I will be in violation of the will of God. it would be better for me not to seek healing. It would become very confusing to know who God wants to heal and who God doesn’t want to heal.

3.    It’s God’s will to heal all, as much as it is God’s will for all to be saved

  • This view is based on the Word of God, it’s based on faith in on having an understand of the will and character of God
  • We only have to look at the ministry of Jesus who came to reveal the will of God. Mark 4:23-24,
  • You cannot walk in the truth if you do not know the truth John 8:32
  • The will of God is not based on ignorance, it’s not based on experience, God will is only ever clearly understood by the renewing of our minds according to the Word of God. Rom 12:2
  • Here are some great bible verse to memorise and meditate on and allow God to build faith in your life. Rom 10:17

Psa 103:2  Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits
Psa 103:3  who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
1 Pet 2:24  He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.
1Jn 5:14  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
1Jn 5:15  And if we know that he hears us whatever we ask we know that we have what we asked of him.

God heart was demonstrated and modelled in the Lord prayer. Mat 6:9-13

  • It is Gods heart that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven, we know that sickness does not exist in heaven
  • The good news of the gospel is not about waiting until we get to heaven to experience all God has for us but for us to believe that God wants to bring heaven to earth now.

Is sickness working for our good

When we understand the cause of sickness that came into the world when sin and corruption, this will help us to stand in faith we have to know who we are stand with and who we are standing against. Here is one scripture in two different translations.

KJV Rom 8:28  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
NIV Rom 8:28  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

One verse says that:

  • KJV: And we know that all things work for our good
  • NIV: And we know that in all things God works for the good
  • The challenge with the different translations of this verse, one says things work for our good and the other says God works for our good
  • In the point of our need it is vital to know who and what is working for our good
  • In every situation we need to know sickness is never working for my good, I want to know God is working for my good in the sickness.

It is very important to know and understand the source of our sickness

  • When God created the earth and mankind, he created it perfect and we understand that before sin came into the worlds there was no sickness, no decay, no death
  • When sin came into the world so did sickness, decay and death
  • If we believe that God is the cause of sickness then our fight for health is really against God, so let’s lay a foundation for healing

Acts 10:38 (Amplified Bible) How God anointed and consecrated Jesus of Nazareth with the [Holy] Spirit and with strength and ability and power; how He went about doing good and, [a]in particular, curing all who were harassed and oppressed by [the power of] the devil, for God was with Him.

  • We’re not speaking about demon possessing, but how Jesus healed all who were being harassed by the devil
  • If we consider the doctrine of angels and demons and just as God has his angels on assignment the enemy has his angels on assignments, there are spirits of infirmity that have been assigned to harass people. Mat 8:16, Luke 13:11, 1 John 3:8, 1 John 5:19

The biblical definition of a Christian is someone that is no longer following the ways of the world; we have turned from sin and turned to God. That is the goal of the Christian life, we have the choice of whether we live under the influence of the enemy or the power of God. John 10:10

  • The way we allow the influence of the enemy is when we listen to the lies of the enemy instead of walking in the truth of God’s word
  • Adam and Eve missed out on the blessings of God because they fell for the lie of the enemy. 1 Pet 5:8
  • For us to walk in the truth we have to walk in the light of God’s word 3 John 1:2-3
  • The bible makes it clear that the enemy is out to influence our lives, render us ineffective in the kingdom, what a better way to do that, than through sickness

If we are going to stand in faith we have to have a clear understanding that the root cause of sickness is a result of the fall and the result of Adams rebellion caused by the devil’s deception.

  • In Ex 15:26 God gives a revelation to the Children of Israel of himself as the God who heal, here God is speaking in the permissive tense, God does not bring the sickness upon us but when we break God’s laws he has to stand back and allow sickness to come. Exo 23:25

God revealed Himself in the Old Testament as our healer, even under the old covenant healing was appropriated by faith in God and His word. Prov 4:20-22, Psa 103:2-3, Psa 105:37, Psa 107:19-20

James gives us great insight in the trials and testing we face in life. Jas 1:2-4

  • There are two very important words to understand here
  • Trials: peirasmos: a putting to proof experience [of evil], solicitation, discipline or provocation); by implication adversity: – temptation, try.
  • Testing: dokimion: a testing; by implication trustworthiness, trying.
  • What we have to understand that in life the devil allows trails in order to trip us up
  • God tests our faith to see if we will trust him
  • So, when a trail comes what really is on trial is our faith

Jas 1:13  When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;

  • We have to understand that Gods is never the one tempting or putting us through trials, Very simple rule is: God is good, Devil is Bad
  • If we believe that God is the cause of sickness then our fight for health is really against God, so let’s follow this through as a foundation for healing

1Jn 3:8  He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Joh 8:44  You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Joh 10:10  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

The devil and his cohorts in the bible they are called

  • Devils Mark 1:34
  • Evil spirits Mark 1:23
  • Unclean spirit Mat 10:1
  • Epilepsy Mark 9:17-18
  • Deaf and Dumb Mark 9:25
  • Spirit of Infirmity Luke 13:11
  • Blind and Dumb Math 12:22
  • Deceiving spirits 1 Tim 4:1

Think about the concept of God putting sickness on us for a minute, if Jesus went to the cross for our forgiveness, for our healing, for our deliverance, our punishment. God would be working against the victory of the cross by putting these things on us or allowing these things to come, in a sense that would mean that there was some sort of anarchy in heaven, because God would be violating the work and the power of cross if he was the one putting or allowing sickness and pain and devastation to come on people

James says when we go through a trial or are being tempted “Don’t say it is God tempting you, for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;
